Photonics and Physical Electronics

Devices based on light, electrons, semiconductors, detectors, sensors, lasers, and optoelectronics.

General idea of the topic

Photonics and optoelectronics investigate the generation, modulation, waveguiding, amplification, and detection of light leveraging the quantum and electromagnetic properties of semiconductor heterostructures and dielectric media. They form the technological backbone of global high-bandwidth fiber-optic telecommunications, high-efficiency solid-state LED illumination, and integrated photonic processing.

This node covers semiconductor physics (p-n junctions, quantum wells), diode/DFB lasers, optical dielectric waveguides, single-mode silica fibers, PIN and avalanche photodiodes (APDs), and electro-optic modulators (Pockels effect).

What you will truly understand

You will understand how population inversion in direct-bandgap semiconductor heterostructures (e.g. GaAs, InP) sustains coherent stimulated photon emission within Fabry-Pérot resonant optical cavities.

You will calculate chromatic dispersion and attenuation minima in silica optical fibers (optical transmission window at 1550 nm1550\text{ nm}, ≈0.2 dB/km\approx 0.2\text{ dB/km}) and solve modal Maxwell eigenvalue equations for planar dielectric waveguides.

Recommended learning route

  1. Semiconductor optoelectronics: radiative vs non-radiative recombination, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and quantum well bandgap engineering.
  2. Semiconductor lasers: optical modal gain, threshold current density, stimulated emission, and DFB/VCSEL cavity architectures.
  3. Optical waveguiding and fibers: total internal reflection, TE/TM transverse modes, single-mode fiber cutoff frequencies, and chromatic dispersion.
  4. Photodetection and modulation: PIN photodiode responsivity, avalanche multiplication excess noise, and Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulators.

Physical criterion you must acquire

Recognizing why indirect-bandgap semiconductors (such as pure silicon) cannot efficiently emit light due to required phonon-assisted transitions, necessitating direct-bandgap III-V semiconductors for active laser sources.

Connection with real problems
