Physical Oceanography
Physics of the ocean: currents, waves, tides, mixing, stratification, and exchange with the atmosphere.
General idea of the topic
Physical oceanography explores the fluid motion, thermodynamic state variables, and global heat/mass transport within planetary oceans using rotating geophysical fluid dynamics. Oceans absorb and store over 90% of excess planetary heat, redistributing enthalpy globally via the deep thermohaline conveyor circulation and wind-driven surface gyres.
This node covers seawater thermodynamics (TEOS-10 equation of state, salinity, potential density), Ekman spiral boundary layers, geostrophic ocean currents, planetary oceanic Kelvin/Rossby waves, and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
What you will truly understand
You will understand how surface wind shear stress coupled with Coriolis deflection generates the Ekman spiral, producing a depth-integrated net surface mass transport directed strictly to the right of the wind in the Northern Hemisphere.
You will see how Ekman suction and pumping across subtropical gyres establishes sea surface height dynamic topography, driving boundary currents such as the Gulf Stream and Kuroshio.
Recommended learning route
- Seawater thermodynamics and stratification: practical salinity, potential temperature, in situ density, and pycnocline/thermocline stability.
- Wind-driven surface boundary layer: Ekman spiral kinematics, Ekman depth, coastal upwelling, and vertical Ekman pumping.
- Geostrophic circulation and oceanic gyres: oceanic geostrophy, westward intensification (Stommel's -plane theory), and western boundary currents.
- Ocean waves and climate teleconnections: internal gravity waves, equatorial Kelvin waves, ENSO feedback cycles, and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
Physical criterion you must acquire
Recognizing that the latitudinal gradient of the planetary Coriolis parameter () breaks east-west ocean basin symmetry, concentrating strong, narrow currents on western oceanic boundaries.
Connection with real problems
- Monitoring stability and potential tipping points of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
- Seasonal forecasting of global El Niño/La Niña climate anomalies using the Argo profiling float array.
- Marine microplastic transport tracking and offshore oil spill dispersion containment.
