Plasma Physics

Ionization, quasineutrality, collective scales, waves, magnetization, and confinement.

General idea of the topic

Plasma, the fourth state of matter, is a quasi-neutral ionized gas where collective long-range electromagnetic interactions dominate over short-range binary collisions. It comprises over 99% of the visible baryonic universe. Its modeling combines charged-particle kinetic theory with electrodynamics and fluid mechanics within the framework of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD).

This node covers Debye shielding, plasma oscillations, ideal and resistive MHD, Alfvén waves, plasma instabilities, and magnetic confinement fusion (Tokamaks / Stellarators).

What you will truly understand

You will understand Debye screening (length λD\lambda_D) through which mobile electrons dynamically shield electrostatic potentials, and high-frequency collective electron Langmuir oscillations ωp\omega_p.

You will derive Alfvén's frozen-in flux theorem and Lawson's triple product criterion for thermonuclear fusion ignition (nτT≥3×1021 keV s m−3n \tau T \ge 3 \times 10^{21}\text{ keV s m}^{-3}).

Recommended learning route

  1. Plasma fundamentals: ionization thermodynamics, plasma parameter, Debye length, and Langmuir frequency ωp\omega_p.
  2. Single-particle orbit theory: cyclotron gyration, E⃗×B⃗\vec{E} \times \vec{B} drift, gradient-B drift, and magnetic mirror bottling.
  3. Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD): single-fluid equations, magnetic pressure B2/2μ0B^2/2\mu_0, magnetic tension, and Alfvén waves.
  4. Magnetic confinement and stability: Grad-Shafranov equilibrium in Tokamaks, kink/sausage instabilities, and Lawson ignition criterion.

Physical criterion you must acquire

Assessing the plasma beta parameter β=2μ0p/B2\beta = 2\mu_0 p / B^2 as the fundamental metric balancing plasma kinetic pressure against magnetic confinement field energy.

Connection with real problems

  • Solar and space astrophysics: solar wind interactions, magnetic reconnection, and coronal mass ejections.
