Field Quantization

Describes how a classical field becomes operators with discrete excitations.

Conceptual context

A classical field assigns values across space and time. After quantization, each mode is described by operators that create and remove excitations. The central question asks how EnE_n changes with nn. The answer connects waves and particles: one additional excitation is one more quantum of the field.

🟢 Essential level

Field quantization turns each vibration mode into an energy ladder. nn states how many excitations occupy the mode and only allows non-negative integers.

EnE_n rises by the same amount whenever one excitation is added, and that step is fixed by ω\omega together with ℏ\hbar. A high-frequency mode therefore has wider spacing than a low-frequency mode. Even at zero nn, vacuum energy remains. The physical graph is not a continuous line but a collection of aligned points. A line may guide the eye, yet intermediate values are not allowed states. Quantization replaces a continuously variable classical amplitude with countable excitations, so the particle concept emerges as one quantum of the field itself. The occupation count is therefore a property of a selected mode, not a label attached permanently to a classical object.

Paul Dirac first quantized the electromagnetic field in 1927, in his paper "The Quantum Theory of the Emission and Absorption of Radiation": that quantization of the field itself, rather than of the particle, is the founding act of quantum field theory, and it is why a photon is simply an excitation of one field mode.

🔵 Formal level

Basic formulas

For a free bosonic mode with fixed ω\omega, the EnE_n of a state with nn n is

Energy of a quantized mode

En=ℏω(n+12)E_n=\hbar\omega(n+\frac{1}{2})

This relation gives equally spaced levels and a zero-point contribution. Consecutive spacing is

Energy increment per quantum

ΔE=ℏω\Delta E=\hbar\omega

ΔE\Delta_{E} depends on ω\omega but not on nn.

Real student questions

Why does energy not start at zero? Ground-state fluctuations remain.

Does the line between points represent real states? No, it only guides the eye.

Is every excitation a particle? For a free field it can be interpreted as one quantum; interactions make the identification subtler.

What does the [a,adagger][a,a_dagger] indicate? Operators are not ordinary numbers and order matters.

Final synthesis

Each mode forms a discrete and equally-spaced energy ladder. nn counts excitations, EnE_n includes the vacuum contribution, and ΔE\Delta_{E} depends linearly on the frequency. Particles emerge as quanta of the field. The uniformity of the ladder reflects the linearity of the oscillator, and its breakdown signals the presence of interactions or nonlinearities that the basic model does not capture. This conceptual framework — treating fields as collections of quantized oscillators — remains the foundational language of modern particle physics, quantum optics, and condensed matter theory.
