Sources of the Magnetic Field

Creation of magnetic fields by steady electric currents via Biot-Savart and Ampere's laws.

General idea of the topic

This block studies how electric currents generate magnetic fields and how to calculate them quantitatively using the Biot-Savart law for arbitrary geometries and Ampère's law when symmetry is present.

Both methods are applied to straight wires, circular loops and solenoids, comparing results and validating vector and dimensional coherence in each source configuration.

What you will truly understand

  • How a current element generates a differential contribution to the magnetic field.
  • How to integrate Biot-Savart for straight wires, loops and solenoids.
  • How to apply Ampère's law when symmetry allows obtaining the field without explicit integration.
  • How to compare results from both methods and validate coherence.

Recommended learning route

  1. Biot-Savart law and field of an infinite wire.
  2. Field of loops and solenoids.
  3. Ampère's law and applications with symmetry.

Physical criterion you must acquire

Choose the method by symmetry: Ampère when there is cylindrical or planar symmetry, Biot-Savart when there is not. Verify direction with the right-hand rule and units at every step.

Connection with real problems

Electromagnets, motor coils, valve solenoids, magnetic resonance imaging and particle guidance.

Final goal of the topic

Calculate magnetic fields from real sources with vector traceability, symmetry validation and approximation criteria.
