Rotational Dynamics (Rotation)

Fundamental equation of rotational dynamics and angular response under external torques.

General idea of the topic

Rotational dynamics explains why a body changes its spin. The cause is not the force alone but its moment about the axis, and the body's response depends on how its mass is distributed, which the moment of inertia captures.

The topic brings together the three pieces of the second law of rotation: the moment of a force, the moment of inertia and the equation that relates them to the angular acceleration. It adds friction, which lets a wheel roll without slipping. When the axis of rotation changes direction, the study is extended to the rigid body in three dimensions, where the inertia tensor and Euler's equations replace the scalar equation.

What you will truly understand

By the end you will be able to compute the moment of a force and the moment of inertia of a body, set up the rotation equation and solve systems with massive pulleys and wheels with friction.

You will also see the parallelism between F = ma and τ = Iα.

Recommended learning route

  1. Torque (Moment of a Force): definition and computation of the moment of a force about an axis.
  2. Newton's Second Law for Rotation: second law of rotation and its analogy with translation.
  3. Rotational Dynamics with Friction: role of friction in spin and rolling, with worked examples.
  4. Moment of Inertia: definition, standard values, parallel-axis theorem and inertia tensor.
  5. 3D Rigid Body: free rotation of a body in three dimensions and Euler's equations.

Physical criterion you must acquire

The essential criterion is to compute the moments and the moment of inertia about the same axis. Changing the axis changes both, and the parallel-axis theorem lets you move from the axis through the center of mass to a parallel one without recomputing.

Connection with real problems

  • massive pulleys and lifting mechanisms.
  • vehicle wheels and braking.
  • flywheels and rotors.
  • doors, wrenches and rotating levers.

Final goal of the topic

The final goal is to set up and solve the dynamics of rotating rigid bodies, choose the axis wisely and relate the applied moment to the angular acceleration clearly.
