Rotation Fundamentals
Fundamental angular variables, vector angular velocity, and baseline moment of inertia.
General idea of the topic
Before talking about the causes of rotation we need to be able to describe it. In a rigid body all points sweep the same angle in the same time, so the angle, the angular velocity and the angular acceleration are enough to describe the whole body.
The topic defines those quantities, derives the kinematic equations of rotation with constant angular acceleration, which are twins of the rectilinear ones, and relates each angular quantity to the linear one of a point at distance r from the axis. It closes with a concept map and the linear-angular analogy.
What you will truly understand
By the end you will be able to convert angles to arcs, angular to linear velocity and angular acceleration to tangential and centripetal acceleration, and solve problems of uniform and uniformly accelerated rotation.
You will also be able to use the linear-angular analogy to translate any translation formula.
Recommended learning route
- Angular Quantities: angle in radians, angular velocity and acceleration and their units.
- Rotational Kinematics: equations of rotation with constant angular acceleration.
- Relationships Between Linear and Angular Quantities: arc, linear velocity and acceleration of a point at distance r from the axis.
- Rotational Concept Map: map organizing the rotation quantities and how they connect.
- Linear-Angular Analogy: table of equivalences between translation and rotation.
Physical criterion you must acquire
The essential criterion is to work with angles in radians: the relations s = rθ, v = rω and a = rα only hold that way. A point of the body always has centripetal acceleration ω²r, even if the angular velocity is constant, and has tangential acceleration only if the angular velocity changes.
Connection with real problems
- wheels, disks and pulleys.
- motors and rotation speeds in revolutions per minute.
- clocks, gears and transmissions.
- satellites and rotating celestial bodies.
Final goal of the topic
The final goal is to describe any rotation of a rigid body precisely and convert between angular and linear quantities without errors.
