Concept of a Wave

Physical concept of a wave as propagation of a disturbance that transports energy without net transport of matter.

Conceptual context

A wave is a disturbance that propagates. The essential point is not that a piece of matter travels from one end to another, but that an organized change is transmitted through a medium or through a field. On a string, each point moves locally; the pattern advances.

This leaf fixes the basic vocabulary: disturbance, amplitude, wavelength, frequency, period, and propagation speed. Without this separation, interference, sound, light, transported energy, and motion of the medium are easily confused.

🟢 Essential level

Imagine a stretched string. If one end is struck, a pulse appears and travels. The whole string does not move to the other side; each point moves around its equilibrium position and passes the disturbance to neighboring points.

The local quantity that describes that state is yy. If yy is positive, the point is on one side of equilibrium; if it is negative, it is on the other side. The amplitude AA measures the maximum value of that separation. Therefore AA describes oscillation size, not the horizontal distance traveled by the pattern.

The distance between equivalent spatial repetitions is λ\lambda. The temporal rhythm and the speed of pattern advance are studied later with more precision. At this level the essential separation is simpler: how far the medium is displaced, how the shape repeats, and what actually advances.

[!TIP] Before solving, always ask whether you are looking at local motion of the medium or at advance of the wave pattern.

🔵 Formal level

Basic formulas

For a periodic wave, propagation speed connects spatial and temporal repetition:

Speed of a periodic wave

v=λfv = \lambda f

This relation says that, in one temporal cycle, the pattern advances by one wavelength. It does not mean that a particle of the medium travels λ\lambda in each period. On a string, a particle can move up and down while the crest travels to another point.

Period and frequency are inverse quantities:

Relation between period and frequency

T=1/fT = 1 / f

If ff increases, cycles repeat more often and TT decreases. This relation belongs to temporal observation at one point of the medium, not to spatial distance between crests.

Real student questions

If a wave transports energy, why does it not transport matter? Because the medium can transmit forces and local motion without its points permanently changing place.

Can a wave exist without a medium? Mechanical waves need a material medium; electromagnetic waves propagate as fields and do not require air, water, or a string.

Amplitude and wavelength are both distances, so why are they not the same? AA measures separation from equilibrium; λ\lambda measures separation between equivalent points of the pattern.

Final synthesis

A wave is a disturbance that propagates. The key is separating local from global: yy and AA describe the state or size of the disturbance; λ\lambda, ff, and TT describe repetition; vv describes pattern advance. With that separation, formulas stop being recipes and become physical readings.
